overview
Zombie Beach Party is a fun new twist on the “snake” genre. The player controls a zombie that goes around the beach infecting humans, who become zombies that then join the player in a conga line.
As the level progresses, the difficulty increases by having the police, the army, and eventually air strikes come to the beach to try and take down the zombie threat.
Miguel was the gameplay programmer for this game, while also strongly contributing to various tools and also game design.
Zombie Skills: Ten different types of zombie skills (coin spawning, stunning nearby humans, etc). All of which can be easily tuned by the designers.
AI: Developed various tuneable AI behaviours for the different humans characters that show up in the beach.
Core loop and optimization: As the gameplay programmer, Miguel coded all the various gameplay mechanics of the game, while also focusing on optimization as the amount of zombies, humans, and particles increased in the endgame.
Tools: A robust “Airstrike pattern editor” for designers to create different types of airstrikes for the endgame portion of the game.
Miguel’s contributions to this project went beyond simply being the gameplay programmer. Proactively creating tools for artists and designers, while also contributing to some of the game design.
